Tour Series #4 Royal Manchester Results

If there was ever a good day to play a links course it was Saturday July 31. With the heat and humidity only slightly elevated, the Royal Manchester course showed its teeth to reflect the difficulty of a real links course. Without a tree on the course, the winds were able to pick up some speed and the high grass in the rough was whispering in the wind saying – “I will devour your golf ball”.

However these link course conditions didn’t affect Brian Duffy as he shot the low score with a 78 net 69 to capture first place. In second was Bob Ingram with a 79 net 72.  Both Brian and Bob were graciously awarded a beer from Brian Murphy for shooting in the 70s.  In third place was Bruce Grau with a net 74.  And one stroke behind finishing in tied for fourth place were Rick Princinsky and Kwang Yim with a net 75.

Ever since Gill Nichols captured all three CTPs at Quail Valley, we have been awarding money on all the par 3s which is good because that is where some golfers had a shining moment. To start off Bob Ingram fluttered a 7-iron on #2 hole to within 10 feet to capture that CTP.  Brian Duffy floated a pitching wedge to within 6 inches of a hole-in-one on the #6 hole. Bruce Grau used a club (I didn’t ask which one) to within 15 feet (also unimpressive) on the #11 hole to capture that CTP.  And John Braun rifled  his four-iron within 9 feet on #15 to capture that CTP.

The total amount of CLEARS were only three with each sharing equally the remaining $90 pot. Dick Markle, the newest participant to the Tour Series, parred the dog-leg right #4 hole to capture one of the CLEARS. Rick Princinsky made a 6 foot breaking par putt on the #7 hole to capture the second CLEAR. Bruce Grau birdied the difficult 382-yard dog-leg left #14 hole to capture the third CLEAR – now birdieing that hole was impressive.
