Queenstown FINALE results

The finale round for the 2020 KHO Tour series was definitely a soggy one. With only a couple of inches of rainfall the previous day the golf course did not drain well so there was one major restriction which was carts were limited to cart path only.  However Queenstown Lakes course had a good showing of golfers that day to battle for the final prize money.  

Starting in overall second place in the tour series, Bob Ingram overcame the soggy fairways in route to shooting a 39 on the front side even parring the difficult #1 handicap hole #5 a par 4 395 yard hole for a CLEAR.  Brian Duffy starting off in third place in the tour series countered with a 41 on the front side and parring the long, water guarded 504 yard par 5 #4 hole for a CLEAR. Starting in overall first place was Gary Boukis who started the round off with some difficulty hitting his tee shot over the ravine on the second hole. Then Gary lost his trusty brown Ping hybrid somewhere on the front side. This caused his golf game to slump to a 42 on the front side.  Brian Murphy had difficulty negotiating the water hazards along the course which were plentiful as the name of the course is called “Lakes”. Brian Murphy did finish well on the front side as he was able to par the 151 yard (just handicap eligible) par 3 #8 hole and then birdied the par 4 325 yard #9 hole for his only two CLEARs. On the back side Brian Murphy could not continue his stellar play as he had difficulty getting distance with his tee shot through the wet fairways.

The other group had other issues of their own. Bruce Grau had difficulty all day long chipping his golf ball off the wet fairway. Then he convinced Gill Nichols to drive their cart to an unfortunate tee shot left of the fairway on hole #5. Did I mention that the course was limited to cart path only? Not only was his tee shot in an unfortunate place, but the golf cart also got stuck in the soggy grounds which required other members in the group to push them out. Truly KNUCKLEHEADS. Jerome Lyons was making a move on the back nine as he started all the way down in sixth position in the overall tour series standings by parring the long 379 yard par 4 #10 hole for his CLEAR. Kwang Yim decided to carry his bag and slug around the course only to discover that the distance between the greens and next tees was about 6 blocks long. Kwang ended up with zero CLEARS and two wet shoes.

Gary Boukis did start to rebound on the back 9 holes with a nice birdie on the par 3 140 yard hole #11 for his CLEAR.  With no one in the top three spots making a move on the back nine, Brian Duffy took matter in his own hands. After Bob pulled his tee shot on hole #15 in the tall grass, Brian Duffy dumped Gary Boukis out of the cart down the cart path on hole #15 almost throwing Gary and his golf club into the neighboring pond. Brian then parred the lengthy par 5 525 yard hole #15 for the final CLEAR then parred both #17 & #18 to close out all contenders, finish first in the Queenstown FINALE,  and claim the trophy as 2020 Tour Series winner. CONGRATS to Brian. Above is a picture of last year’s winner Jerome presenting the trophy to Brian. Finishing in overall second place was Bob Ingram, Gary Boukis finished third, and climbing from sixth to fourth was Jerome Lyons.

Afterwards the gang headed over to Annie’s Paramount Steak & Seafood House on Kent Narrows for some good eats and final good-byes for the summer.
