Knuckleheads we lost

Gregory (Greg) A. Bayor of Tampa, FL, passed away on Saturday July 29, 2023 after a courageous 6 years battle with cancer. Family was with him at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Virginia (Gini) Gambrill Bayor of Tampa; Sister, Suzannah Andrews Barrie (Ian) of Alto,MI; Brother, Patrick Kennedy Bayor (Carey) of Bradenton, FL; Sister, Elizabeth Bayor Stahler (Gregory) of Wheaton, IL; Sister, Christiane Bayor Brennan (Timothy) of Seattle, WA; Aunt, Phyllis Minniear Franzman of DeMotte, IN; Sister-in-Law, Linda Gambrill Brace of Ijamsville, MD; numerous Nieces & Nephews as well as best friends, Timothy Armbrecht of South Amboy, NJ & William (Biff) Pierce Brown of Long Neck, DE. Greg was born in Gary, IN on July 14,1948 (aka Bastille Day - which made his French descent Grandfather very happy) to Doris Minniear Bayor & Charles Richard Bayor. In a career spanning 39 years, Greg provided thousands upon thousands of children & adults with quality programs & special events as Director of Recreation & Parks for the Cities of Rockville, MD; Elgin, IL; Baltimore, MD and Montgomery County, MD culminating with his retirement in late 2017 from the City of Tampa after restructuring the Department, beginning with the redesign of the department logo. He successfully guided the construction of the Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park. Some other projects included the renovation of the Roy Jenkins Pool; the creation of Water Works Park & the innovative Perry Harvey Park. He brought the Cal Ripken,Sr Foundation to Tampa to create two parks for At Risk Youth - Baseball at Sulphur Springs & a Multi-Purpose Field at the Glazer Family Field at NFL Y.E.T. Center. He was extremely proud of the award winning dance & gymnastics teams. Having played Lacrosse at the University of Baltimore he was thrilled to introduce the sport into the program to enthusiastic participants, most of whom had never seen it played. The Stay to Play Program which he created to keep Rec Centers open until midnight during the summers, kept at-risk youth not only safe, but provided meals, often the only meal attendees would receive in a day. He felt it was one of his most important accomplishments. Greg earned the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 14. He attended Temple University in Philadelphia & the University of Baltimore where he played soccer & lacrosse. He was President of the Alumni Association & a Member of the Board of Governors. He was also a former Member of the Board at the acclaimed Lowry Park Zoo (now, Zoo Tampa) & at the Museum of Science & Industry. Greg's passion for all things golf is well documented, not only as a student of the game but his redesigns of three public courses and a stint as an assistant golf course superintendent after college. He was an avid skier & fisherman & an artist who dabbled in many media. In retirement he ventured into woodturning creating beautiful bowls & pens which he gifted to family & friends. Greg was known for his creativity, his love of the Baltimore Ravens, his sense of humor & practical jokes, organizing special events, both personal & professional & as the Cool Uncle to his family & Peter Pan to his wife. Celebrations of Life to be held in Tampa & Maryland at later dates. Donations in Greg's Honor may be made to Feeding Tampa Bay or Moffitt Cancer Center. Tommy Stewart lived the life as carefree as a free bird. His love of the game of golf transcends all Knuckleheads combined.

Greg Bear: I came in second to Tommy in OC, last group everyone watching at 18, and I am chocking. He was the best wind player I ever saw. At evening gathering (let's say we were all toasted on favorite....); we're in a four bedroom condo on boardwalk and we had 16 knuckleheads all staying there ( that floor was terrible to sleep on); I think Bunky presented the Big Dog trophy, someone then yelled out "speech, speech: Tommy paused a moment and said "woof woof, woof woof wolf, wolf, paused and repeated" the place went nuts woofing back at him. After we calmed down, Tommy started woofing again, I guess you had to be there.

Rich was a man who loved golf and dedicated his life to be nice to everyone - even to the Knuckleheads. He was a great golfer and even a better gentleman who was always there if anyone needed anything. Rich always played with a yellow color golf ball because it was easier for him to track it. Often times, this was unnecessary because his shots would mostly wind up in a fairway. Most of his shots were a lower "worm burners" so he played extremely well in windy conditions. Rich brought a lot of joy and competition to the Knucklehead group and each and everyone in the group misses the man. The named Knucklehead Tour Series is a grueling year long tournament dedicated to the life and the commitments of Mr. Richard Robb of the Knucklehead fame.

Greg Bear: Always asked (more than once in a round) for a coin to use as marker; never gave them back, and to add insult he'd jiggle then is pocket as you putted . He always ordered a bud light and burger with no lettuce or tomato, so naturally it always came with lettuce and tomato
