Carroll Valley Results
Overall Carroll Valley course conditions were very good. And Carroll Valley showed its mighty strength with its thick rough and long par 3-s. The average score was higher overall. But that didn’t deter Michael Jan with his excellent iron play and superb short game to overcome his driving difficulties to capture first place with a score of 80 net 67. Hot on his heels with a consistent driving game was Jeff Gruel who placed second with a score of 89 net 70. Bruce Grau snuck into third place by himself with a net 76. And because we had a good showing of 14 players, the prince of Saudi Arabia also awarded prize money to fourth and fifth place finishers. Fourth place finishers were Kwang Yim and Gill Nichols both with a net of 77 so they split the combo of fourth place ($15) and fifth place ($10) prize money to each get $12.50.
There were birdies to be had at Carroll Valley and Dick Markle started off the birdie wagon by birding the par 5 first hole. Kwang Yim had two birdies for clears on holes #6 and the par 5 #9 hole by perfectly avoiding the water. Jeff Gruel birdied the #7 hole for a clear also. Greg Muolo garnered a clear by parring the difficult par 3 #5 hole. Gill Nichols also parred the par 3 #15 hole to capture a clear. And Bruce Grau captured the last clear with a par on the par 3 #18 hole. But the best clear was cashed in by Brian Murphy for parring the difficult 421 yard par 4 #16 hole.
In the CTP area, Michael Jan captured the first par 3 CTP with a 9 iron on the #3 hole. Greg Muolo captured the CTP on #5 hole using his 3 wood. Bob Ingram used his driver on both #8 and #11 holes to capture the CTPs for those two holes. Gill Nichols hit a solid 6 iron to capture the uphill #15 CTP. And Jerome Lyons utilized his 7 iron to perfection in capturing the last CTP on #18 hole.
On the bright side, no one hit their tee shot into the nearby swimming pool on #18 hole this year. However Bob Ingram did wander bare foot into the creek fronting the green on the par 5 #4 hole looking like a novice on stilts.
Thanks again for the good showing at Carroll Valley. If we can have a good turnout then course managers will be more favorable to provide a discount to their prime rate.
