Rick Princinsky wins the inaugural Tommy Stewart Memorial Tournament
With the slow moving shower approaching the area, Knuckleheads of current and yesteryears gathered at Ocean City to fondly remember and celebrate the one and only Tommy Stewart and to play golf in honor of his legacy. There were flashes of blast from the past faces such as Greg Bear, George Schuster, the Pulaski gang, Brian “drunkard” Fick, Dennis Crehan, Ken Smoot, Hirsh clan, etc. etc. (Sorry the website editors do not know all the Knuckleheads). It was truly a fond gathering of the old “and new” Knuckleheads.
Ocean Pines Golf club was our host for the tournament and fortunately, rain stayed away long enough to allow the Knuckleheads to finish the tournament just before dark. Ocean Pines was in pretty decent condition but it being the one and only Robert Trent Jones Sr. golf course in Maryland, present relatively small undulating greens and pine tree or water hazard lined fairways that were tighter than say Rosanne in spandex.
But Rick maneuvered the course by not using brute force but by using his “wood”. 5 wood that is. He decided to ditch the driver and/or 3 wood and use his coveted 5 wood to launch his tee shots on most of the holes to give up some yards for accuracy.
His strategy paid off handsomely as he kept out of trouble and came in first with a solid round of 85 with the winning net score of 69.
Rick becomes the first “INAUGURAL” Tommy Steward Memorial Tournament winner (we don’t know what to call him yet – Big what?) and the magnificent trophy along with $100 cash prize was awarded to him in our remembering Tommy memorial dinner at Aloft Hotel Ballroom (Stay tuned. More to come on that story).
Congratulations Rick!
